FAQ for Bodyworks
Mirimiri: The Energetic Foundation
Mirimiri is more than just a massage; it is an integral Māori healing practice that focuses on restoring balance and fostering deep emotional and physical healing. Through intuitive movement and gentle touch, we activate cellular memory to shift stagnant energy and promote overall well-being.
In a Mirimiri session, you may experience the following elements:
Discussion (Kōrero): Engaging in quiet dialogue to uncover any stored emotional tension, helping to create a more personalised experience.
Intuitive Touch: Gentle, nurturing techniques aimed at releasing tension and facilitating relaxation.
Our practice is tailored to your unique needs, ensuring that the session resonates with you and supports your healing journey.
Romiromi: Deep Physical Release
Romiromi focuses on the physical aspects of our practice, targeting the muscles, fascia, and connective tissue. We apply deep pressure to specific vital acupressure points (haemata) to release both physical and emotional blockages.
Our Techniques & Tools:
To facilitate this release, we primarily use the following methods:
Practitioner’s Body: We apply varying levels of pressure using our palms, fingers, elbows, forearms, knees, and body weight. This custom approach tailors the experience to your tolerance and specific needs.
Key Benefits:
Releasing Restrictions: Romiromi enhances circulation and stimulates the body’s natural healing processes, helping to release tension.
Improving Mobility: The techniques aim to reduce chronic pain and expand your range of motion, allowing for greater freedom of movement.
Structural Alignment: By aligning bones and tissues, Romiromi effectively reduces pain from trauma (mamae), contributing to overall physical and emotional well-being.
Through the integrated practices of Mirimiri and Romiromi, clients receive a holistic approach to healing that addresses both physical and emotional health. This combination not only relieves tension and discomfort but also supports the release of emotional blockages held within the body.
“Somatic” simply means “of the body.” While many therapies focus only on talking, somatic healing focuses on the mind-body connection. At Renewal, we use mindfulness to help you become aware of how your body holds onto stress or past experiences. By checking in with your physical sensations, we help you release “stuck” energy and find a greater sense of safety and ease in your own skin.
Yes, both Romiromi and Mirimiri are considered forms of somatic healing. These traditional Māori bodywork practices embody the principles of somatic healing by emphasising the deep connection between the mind, body, and spirit. Here’s how they relate:
-
Mind-Body Connection: Both Romiromi and Mirimiri focus on helping individuals tune into their bodily sensations and emotional states. By encouraging clients to explore tension and discomfort, these practices align with somatic healing’s emphasis on the body’s wisdom in processing trauma and stress.
-
Holistic Approach: Somatic healing aims to address the whole person—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Similarly, Romiromi and Mirimiri work on various levels of wellness, promoting balance and harmony throughout the entire being.
-
Release of Stored Tension: Both practices involve techniques that address deeply held tension in the body. Mirimiri uses gentle, nurturing touch for relaxation, while Romiromi employs more vigorous movements to agitate and release energetic blockages. This physical release is essential in somatic healing for healing emotional trauma.
-
Energetic Cleansing: In both Romiromi and Mirimiri, tools such as Kōhatu (stones) or rākau (wood) tools are used to facilitate the movement and cleansing of energy within the body. This energetic aspect aligns with somatic healing practices, which aim to clear energetic blockages that impede both emotional and physical healing. Restoring the flow of energy helps to enhance the body’s natural healing capabilities.
-
Empowerment and Self-Awareness: These practices encourage clients to develop a deeper sense of self-awareness and empowerment regarding their healing processes. They help individuals recognise their bodily sensations, emotions, and reactions, fostering a stronger connection with themselves—a key component of somatic healing.
-
Trauma Recovery: Both Romiromi and Mirimiri are particularly beneficial for individuals recovering from trauma. They provide a safe and supportive environment for clients to process and heal from emotional and physical wounds. By addressing the trauma stored in the body, these practices promote healing and help restore balance and well-being.
There’s no need for any special preparations before your bodywork session. However, we recommend avoiding coffee or a large meal right before your session. Also, please ensure your feet are clean, as this contributes to a comfortable and pleasant experience.
To ensure you feel fully supported during your sessions, we honor the tradition of this work while prioritising your personal boundaries.
-
Each session traditionally begins with a Karakia (prayer) and the use of Wai Tai (blessed seawater), which serve as a means of energetic cleansing and provide spiritual protection. We acknowledge the sacredness of these rituals and understand that everyone has their own beliefs and comfort levels regarding these practices. If you have any reservations or feel uneasy about these elements, please feel free to discuss your feelings with our staff at any time. Your comfort and well-being are our top priorities.
-
Prioritising Your Needs: We focus our time on the areas of your body where energy feels most stagnant. For a true and lasting release, it may not be necessary to address the entire body in a single session if certain areas require deeper attention.
-
A Safe Space: Your safety is of utmost importance to us. We work at a pace that respects your body’s readiness, ensuring you remain in control of your healing journey.
For your first bodywork session, we recommend booking a 90 minutes session. This provides plenty of time to include important aspects such as:
- Pre-Bodywork Consultation: We’ll take the time to understand your needs and any areas you’d like to focus on.
- The Bodywork Itself: An indulgent, relaxing experience that you may not want to end!
- Debriefing: You’re welcome to share your thoughts, impressions, or any insights after your session.
Choosing a longer initial session gives your body the space to deeply unwind and become receptive, allowing for a more thorough and restorative bodywork experience.
Note: in your follow-up visits, we typically conduct a shorter check-in, allowing you to spend more time focused on receiving bodywork. This enables you to fully relax and maximise the benefits of each session.
While our base treatments use room-temperature oils, you can opt for warm oil to soothe muscle tension or aromatherapy to support your mindset —simply let us know your preference during your consultation.
Note: These enhancements are not available for the Focus Treatment.
The pressure used during our bodywork sessions varies depending on your preferences and needs. It can range from gentle, soothing touches to deeper, firm pressure to effectively release tension and target specific areas. You’re encouraged to communicate your comfort level at any time, and our practitioner will adjust the pressure accordingly to ensure a healing, relaxing experience tailored just for you.
FAQ for Wellness Coaching?
While these roles often overlap, the distinction usually lies in the scope of focus:
-
Life Coaches generally focus on external results and “big picture” milestones, such as career transitions, productivity, and time management.
-
Health Coaches often have a specific focus on physical metrics and clinical outcomes, such as nutrition plans, exercise routines, or managing chronic conditions under professional medical guidance.
-
Wellness Coaches (My Approach): I take a holistic view. Wellness coaching looks at the intersection of your mental, emotional, and physical states.
-
By combining Wellness Coaching with Bodywork, we don’t just talk about your aspirations; we address how stress and habits are physically held in your body. It is about sustainable lifestyle integration rather than just ticking off a checklist of achievements.
While both are transformative, they have different points of focus. Talk therapy (Counselling) often looks back to understand and heal the origins of your emotions or past experiences.
Wellness Coaching is predominantly present and future-focused. We take your current reality and build actionable strategies to move you forward.
My background in counselling ensures our coaching sessions are emotionally safe and grounded, but our primary goal is sustainable lifestyle change and physical well-being.
It is ideal for anyone who feels “stuck” in their current habits or overwhelmed by the physical toll of a busy life. If you are feeling stable but know you aren’t quite thriving—perhaps you are navigating burnout, struggling with work-life balance, or feeling disconnected from your body—Wellness Coaching provides the structure and professional support you need to make a lasting change.
Even with a clear wellness plan, if the nervous system is holding onto patterns of tension, new habits can be difficult to maintain. By combining coaching with bodywork, we address mental hurdles through dialogue and physical patterns through touch. This integrated approach helps settle your system, creating a supportive internal environment where new, healthy ways of being can become a natural part of your life.
The Foundation of the Work
The Physical Integration Through Mirimiri and Romiromi, we focus on releasing held physical tension. When the body moves out of a defensive state and into a state of ease, the mind is naturally better able to process information and navigate challenges with clarity.
The Strategic Integration Through coaching, we explore the mindset shifts and practical strategies needed to navigate your life with intention.
The Result By working with both the mind and the body, we ensure that the insights you gain during our conversations are fully embodied. This connection helps your progress feel more stable and sustainable over the long term.
Change takes time to become your “new normal.” While I offer individual sessions for specific resets, I recommend a 10-week coaching program for those looking for genuine transformation. This timeframe allows us to move past the initial phase of a new habit and navigate the real-life obstacles that inevitably arise, ensuring your progress is sustainable.
FAQ for Breathwork
While generally safe, people with certain health conditions (like respiratory issues, cardiovascular problems, or anxiety disorders) should consult a healthcare professional before beginning breathwork practices.
Some may experience lightheadedness or emotional release; it’s important to practice in a safe environment and stop if you feel uncomfortable.
No special equipment is required, just a quiet space and comfortable clothing.
Absolutely! It often complements meditation, romiromi, mirimiri, mindfulness, yoga and other holistic health practices.
There is some scientific evidence indicating that certain breathwork techniques can promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve mental health. However, more extensive research is needed to fully understand and confirm all the benefits. Many benefits are supported by preliminary studies, but individual experiences may vary.

FAQs for infrared sauna
Generally, yes. However, individuals with certain health conditions such as cardiovascular issues, pregnancy, or severe skin conditions should consult their healthcare provider before starting infrared sauna sessions
Many people find benefit with 2-3 sessions per week, but schedules can vary based on your individual health and wellness goals. It’s best to listen to your body and consult with your practitioner.
If you’re pregnant or have chronic health conditions, please speak with your healthcare provider before using the sauna to ensure it’s safe for your specific circumstances.
Depending on individual needs and comfort, sauna sessions usually last between 15 to 30 minutes.
It’s normal to sweat a lot during the session. Stay hydrated and listen to your body—if you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or uncomfortable, it’s best to exit the sauna.
FAQs for Ice Bath (Cold Water Therapy)
Most people can enjoy the benefits, but individuals with heart conditions, Raynaud’s disease, or certain circulation issues should consult their healthcare provider before trying cold water immersion.
For beginners, it’s common to start with short intervals allowing your body to gradually build up tolerance. Over time, as you become more accustomed, you can gradually extend your session up to 10-15 minutes.
Remember, always listen to your body and never push beyond your comfort level. The duration can vary depending on individual tolerance and the specific benefits you’re seeking. Your comfort and safety are always the priority.
Ensure you are well-hydrated and have a warm towel or blanket nearby for after your session. It’s also wise to warm up gently beforehand.
It’s best to start with 1-3 times a week and see how your body responds. Daily use is generally not necessary and should be approached cautiously, especially for beginners.
Cold water immersion can cause shock or discomfort if not done properly. If you experience chest pain, extreme numbness, or dizziness, exit the water immediately and seek medical advice.
